Introduced in 1935 as a successor to the Renault FT of World War I, the R35 featured a cast turret, a three-piece bolted cast hull, and was armed with a 37mm gun. Approximately 1,500 units were produced, serving as a cornerstone of France’s armored forces during the German invasion in May–June 1940.

Historical Context
The Renault R35 was developed to provide the French Army with a modern, heavily armored infantry support tank. Its design emphasized protection, featuring thick armor and a compact profile. However, during the rapid German advances of 1940, the R35’s relatively slow speed and limited armament highlighted its shortcomings against more mobile and better-armed adversaries. Despite these challenges, the R35 played a significant role in France’s defensive efforts during the early years of the war.
